Geology

Gently inclined beds of sandstone and mudstone make up Sea Lion Island. The rocks were originally deposited as layers of sand and mud in a very large, deep lake about 250 million years ago. On some of the mudstone beds thin, meandering lines can be seen. These are the traces made by soft-bodied animals and possibly fish, as they grazed across the muddy lakebed.
