14th February 2001

At 4pm on Valentines Day 2001, a guest at the Lodge spotted a juvenile Orca that had beached and was crying out to four other Orcas just off shore. One of these was obviously the mother of the stranded whale, she swam up and down the shore calling back. It was essential that the young calf be returned to its mother as soon as possible. Staff and guests from the Lodge finally managed to refloat the whale two and a half hours later, having spent much of this time waist deep in the very cold South Atlantic. Free at last, the calf shot off towards its mother, who showed her appreciation by breaching and slapping her tail on the water.
